In all other cases, use your best judgment; we trust you.

As a distributed team that works asynchronously, the traditional 9-5 workday doesn’t apply to us.
Whether you’re a morning lark or a night owl, you should work when it suits you best.
And when you need to take time off – for errands, appointments, life, or leisure, feel free to do so using your best judgment. You’re an adult, and we trust you to manage your time and deliverables appropriately.
Weekends are a recurring time each week to recharge and reset. The default assumption as a company is that you are offline for the weekends.
If you are not officially on-call (mostly pertaining to engineering and operations/support), please feel comfortable to unplug and be away. If you are planning to work over the weekend, that's totally fine, but this is not expected.
If you anticipate you will need input from the team or help with a project over the weekend, please make sure to coordinate with your teammates in advance to determine if they will be reachable and available over the weekend.
Since we work asynchronously and have team members in countries around the world, we won't specifically call out which national or religious holidays will be observed across the entire company for all. You're free to take off (or work) on whichever holidays are important to you and your family – especially if you have kids and they have off.
For example, if you want to take US Memorial Day off you don't need to ask for permission — just make sure nothing gets dropped. In fact, if you want to take a whole week off for Memorial Day, that's fine too!
Here’s a list of default US holidays to help with planning:
‣
To set clear expectations on availability, we'll adopt a default holiday policy for major international holidays and treat these days like weekends. You're welcome to work if you'd like, but it's not expected.
A monthly Comms message will be posted to the 🏖️ Vacation & Time-off channel for default holidays, so there's no need to post your own.
If you'll be out for less than a day (i.e. for a doctor's appointment or running an errand), there's no need to update the time off calendar or set any away messages. Since we work asynchronously, when you get your work done over the course of the day is entirely up to you.
<aside> 👆 If you're working collaboratively with a team, updating your personal calendar with a "busy" or "away" block, or including a mention in your daily standup message may be helpful for awareness.

There may be times when you'll have limited availability for more than a day, but you're not explicitly taking time-off. Examples include having family visiting, shifting your schedule for childcare, or other similar happenings where you may not be working on your typical schedule.
If this is the case, send a message to the Vacation & Time-off channel “Limited Availability” in the subject line, and mention teammates that might need to know.
It's worth mentioning that this type of "limited availability" time does not count towards our vacation requirement and shouldn't be used in place of time off. The expectation is that you are working, but on an off schedule. If you need the time off properly, you should take it.
