Below you'll find a sample of highlighted product launches from 2021, grouped roughly along some key themes.

📶 Dexcom

In August, we wrapped up our initial pilot of the Dexcom offering. We shipped Dexcom units to several hundred new and existing members and collected detailed feedback on the experience along the way. Unlike the Freestyle Libre, Dexcom G6 sensors stream glucose data to smartphones without having to be manually scanned. Dexcom also has an API with which we can integrate at scale. On the downside, the API is currently degraded to a three hour delay, and the dual sensor + transmitter CGM package can be cumbersome.

The headline result from the pilot is that users do prefer the Dexcom to FreeStyle Libre, and given the hypothetical of real time rather than delayed data, do so by a very large margin.

With this result we will now move forward towards an Institutional Review Board (IRB) study and partnership with Dexcom, which will allow for real time data integration for Levels members.

💫 Metabolic Awareness - Closing the Loop

Levels believes that behavior change comes from the awareness gained from closed-loop feedback systems. To that end, we launched many features aimed at helping people close loops on how their diet and lifestyle actions affect their wellness, ranging from faster logging and improved anomaly detection to a broader range of loops, outside food, including sleep and activity.

📸 Friction-free Logging

We made many improvements to make logging faster, ranging from a redesigned interface optimized for speed to autocomplete for previous entries. We significantly improved our anomaly detection to draw attention to moments that matter where members forgot to log.

Based on early feedback, we learned that members valued a friction-free logging experience, so to date the add a log flow has been optimized to get in and out as fast as possible. We took the opportunity to redesign the flow with a beautiful design that improves speed by adding an auto-complete experience that merges the copy previous log functionality with typing of notes. Additionally, the new architecture frees up room for future functionality to slot in nicely -- such as adding structured data (e.g., macros) or additional logging options like voice to text.

✨ Event-based magic moments

We created magic moments around many of the most common questions — first glucose spike, nighttime lows, exercise spikes, common foods (e.g., alcohol). When members experience a supported moment, in realtime we'll push a contextual experience to them in the home feed as well as paired with the meal so that they can understand more about what happened.

🦶 Completing the picture beyond meals

We built experiences showcasing the effect of sleep on glucose and meals on sleep through our sleep report and introduced capabilities to track activity via steps count integration.

📊 Charts v2

Visualizing glucose data has been at the heart of the closed-loop feedback system between member choices and their body’s responses. In early May, based on advice and a prototype from Alan, we ran an engineering experiment to determine if we could replace our existing charting library with a different one. The experiment was a success, and we have swapped out our charts for the improved experience. The new library greatly improves our development flexibility, allowing us to design any visuals we need. Moreover, it increases speed (over twice as performant on Android), allowing friction-free engagement.
